Roundtables | The Fluidity of the Collective

Speakers: Clio Van Aerde (Billy Jump), Liliana Francisco (La Concierge), Justine Blau

VENUE: Casino Luxembourg

A joint initiative by Mudam and Casino Luxembourg, Roundtables is a series of pitch presentations and conversations dedicated to the Luxembourg art scene. At the heart of this collaboration lies a simple idea:  gathering around a table to share and discuss.

The project aims to facilitate exchanges between artists, curators and the public in an informal setting. Each session focuses on a specific topic and invites guest speakers and team members from both institutions to address the question at hand. After these pitch presentations, the discussion opens to the public in an informal format, encouraging active participation. Attendees are invited to pose their own questions, engage with the topic, and offer different perspectives, creating a space for meaningful exchange and the emergence of networks within the Luxembourg art community.

Session 3: The Fluidity of the Collective

This third session will explore the role of collective practices in contemporary art and how they shape artistic production and collaboration. Why do artists form collectives? What does collectivity bring to their practices? How do collectives contribute to the creation of new spaces and modes of collaboration? What opportunities exist in Luxembourg for initiatives launched by artistic collectives? The discussion will also examine the relationship between the individual and the collective, and how artists navigate this dynamic.

BILLY JUMP

.

BILLY JUMP is an artist collective exploring transdisciplinary practices and artistic research in performance art. The collective was founded in 2023 by Clio Van Aerde, Maja von Kriegstein and Karolina Rupp and is based in Luxembourg (LU), Berlin (DE) and The Hague (NL).

Billy Jump (he/ she/they) is the fictitious alter ego of its co-founders: they are cheeky, boisterous, curious, wise, ecologically conscious and in love with reclaiming self-care practices. They are spontaneous yet prepared and fluidly move between experimentation, improvisation and expanded composition. Billy Jump is attentive, poetic and pragmatic, and gets around by bicycle.

La Concierge.

La Concierge is an arts platform which supports and promotes artists through exhibitions, events and a vibrant creative community. It embodies the spirit of a dedicated hotel concierge and strives to create welcoming and inclusive spaces where artists feel valued, connected and supported.

The platform encourages collaboration, idea-sharing and collective learning and acts as an artistic hub that facilitates networking opportunities and provides a space for artists to showcase their work. Through its exhibitions and events, La Concierge intends to amplify artistic visibility and support meaningful engagement.

At its core, La Concierge believes in the transformative power of art and is driven to challenge societal and political norms while advocating for inclusivity, diversity and equal opportunities for all artists. Its mission is to create spaces where art serves as a force for reflection and change.

Justine Blau

Justine Blau is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work explores the languages and vernacular uses of photography. Her practice examines the complex relationship between humans and nature. Her research project Veil of Nature led to a publication by K. Verlag, an exhibition at the Tartu University Botanical Garden (Estonia) curated by Fanny Weinquin, and a symposium with the Natural History Museum of Luxembourg. She regularly organises interdisciplinary projects, more recently with the eco-citizen movement CELL on the project L’arbre qui cache la forêt, as part of LUGA (Luxembourg), contributing to a poetic and political citizens’ assembly that brought together artists, researchers, scientists, and activists. Alongside her artistic practice, she serves on the committee of AAPL, Luxembourg’s federation of visual artists.
