Seun Kuti is a Nigerian musician, singer and songwriter renowned for his electrifying performances and socially conscious music. The youngest son of Afrobeat pioneerFela Kuti, he has dedicated most of his life to preserving and expanding his father’s political and musical legacy as the leader of Egypt 80, Fela’s former band. A developing saxophonist and percussionist, Seun joined the band before the age of 12. After Fela’s passing in 1997, he assumed leadership in accordance with his father’s wishes and has led the group ever since. Alongside his musical career, he remains an outspoken pan-African activist and has been involved in campaigns such as #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS against social injustice and police brutality in Nigeria. In 2020, he revived the Movement of the People (M.O.P.), the political party his father founded in 1979, shortly before his own presidential candidacy, which was barred from the elections and suppressed soon afterward by the military government.

Seun Kuti’s music continues to build on the Afrobeat foundation established by his father, blending complex polyrhythms, powerful horn sections, and politically charged lyrics with contemporary influences from jazz, hip-hop, and soul. Over the years, he has released several acclaimed albums withEgypt 80, including Many Things (2008), From Africa with Fury: Rise (2011, co-produced by Brian Eno and John Reynolds), A Long Way Beginning (2014), and the Grammy-nominated Black Times (2018), which featured a collaboration with Carlos Santana.

In 2024, he released Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) via Milan-based independent label Record Kicks, marking a pivotal moment in his career. Executive produced by Lenny Kravitz with artistic production by Fela Kuti’s original engineer Sodi Marciszewer, the album showcased Seun’s evolution as both an artist and activist. A Deluxe Edition followed in May 2025, expanding the original album with remixes and new collaborations, further exploring themes of resistance, empowerment, and cultural pride.

.

Throughout his career, Seun Kuti has collaborated with a wide range of international artists across genres, demonstrating his versatility while keeping Afrobeat’s message of social and political consciousness at its core. His work bridges generations and musical styles, proving that Afrobeat remains a vital force for artistic innovation and social commentary today.
