Day 1: Clervaux, Schumannseck and Ettelbrück

Start your history discovery tour with a focus on the fight for liberation in the north of Luxembourg. Learn all about the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944/1945 at the ‘Musée Bataille et Châteaux’ museum inside Clervaux Castle, where you can also visit the legendary ‘The Family of Man’ photo exhibition. Discover how the battle unfolded, understand the significance of the region and find out what everyday life was like for soldiers and civilians.

The museum is also home to fascinating models of castles in Luxembourg.

If you have enough time, visit all three exhibitions one after the other.

Admission is free with the LuxembourgPass.

Memorial path

Treat yourself to a delicious lunch in one of the restaurants in the pretty town of Clervaux before setting off on a memorable walk along the Schumannseck 1944-45 Memorial Path. The route starts in Nothum and takes you through the woods, where photographic installations are waiting to move and surprise you.

You’ll be walking for around two to three hours in total. Admission is free.

Top tip: Time to spare on your way to the Schumannseck memorial site? Head into Wiltz and step inside the lighthouse-inspired National Strike Monument commemorating the victims of the Nazis’ violence during the general strike in 1942. Admission is free.

Tribute to General Patton

Make your way to Ettelbrück in the afternoon. The General Patton Museum commemorates the liberation of Luxembourg and the role of the US troops led by General Patton. Admission is free with the LuxembourgPass.

Day 2: From Diekirch down to the south through the centre

Your first stop on the second day is the National Museum of Military History in Diekirch. Learn all about what life was like for soldiers and civilians during World War II. Admission is free with the LuxembourgPass.

Stop off for a bite to eat in Diekirch or look out for a nice lunch spot as you make your way down south. You won’t struggle to find food to match your appetite and your budget in Luxembourg!

Poignant cemeteries

There are two memorial sites close to the capital city that will leave a lasting impression on you with their intensity and silence – the American and German military cemeteries in Hamm. It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing and staring at so many crosses. You have to go and experience both of the cemeteries for yourself. Admission is free.

Long live the resistance!

Round off your second day of exploring memories of war and resistance at the National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights in Esch-sur-Alzette – the final stop on your tour. This modern museum’s exhibition about the war years and local resistance has been extended to cover the broader topics of human rights, citizenship and the importance of remembering and respecting history. You can visit for free with the LuxembourgPass.
