Road traffic regulations

Anyone driving a vehicle in Luxembourg must follow the local rules of the road and observe the speed limits.

In Luxembourg, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road and the ‘priority to the right’ rule applies.

Please click on ‘Road traffic regulations’ to read about all the rules of the road that apply in Luxembourg in detail.

Important traffic rules

Drink driving

The drink-drive limit is 0.05%. For new drivers who have had their driving licence for less than two years, the limit is 0.02%.

Stopping and parking

Parking is not permitted on the side of a road marked with a yellow line or within five metres either side of pedestrian and cyclist crossings.

Child car seats

Children who are under the age of 17 and shorter than 150 cm cannot travel without a suitable child restraint system. If a child is travelling in the front passenger seat in a rear-facing car seat, the air bag must be deactivated.

Children weighing more than 36 kg can use the seat belt without a booster seat when sitting in the back of the car.

Hi-vis vests

All car drivers and motorcycle riders must wear a hi-vis vest when they leave their vehicle after an accident or breakdown on a motorway or dual carriageway. Pedestrians must also wear a hi-vis vest when walking along a road without a pavement at night or when visibility is poor.

Winter tyres

Winter tyres

Winter tyres are required in certain situations. When the roads are affected by winter weather conditions (snow, slush, black ice, frost), vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres (M+S).

Winter tyres are required for the drive axles on lorries and other heavy goods vehicles.

Winter tyres are not required for motorcycles, quad bikes and other light vehicles.

Snow chains

All vehicles can be fitted with snow chains if the roads are covered with snow and ice.

Spiked tyres

Spiked tyres are permitted from 1 December until 31 March of the following year when the roads are affected by winter weather conditions. The maximum speed when driving with spiked tyres is 90 km/h on motorways and 70 km/h on other roads.

Fines

The police can issue fines to foreign nationals on the spot.

List of fines according to the road traffic regulations.

Mobile phones

Phone calls are only permitted via a hands-free system. The fine for breaking this rule is EUR 250.

Tolls and toll stickers

Toll stickers are not required, and drivers do not have to pay to use tunnels, motorways and dual carriageways.

Drivers of private vehicles do not have to pay tolls on motorways in Luxembourg, but the Eurovignette road toll applies to lorries and trucks.

E-Scooters

Electric scooters (e-scooters) are a popular way to get around quickly and conveniently. The use of this means of transport is regulated by law and is not entirely risk-free. Accidents involving e-scooters continue to occur and the police regularly detect scooters exceeding the permitted maximum speed of 25 km/h. In doing so, riders endanger not only themselves but also other road users.

What traffic rules apply?

Camping

Free camping

Stopping overnight on roads and in car parks outside of designated camp sites is not permitted.
