Statue of the Virgin Mary in Esch-sur-Sûre

The statue is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of the village of Esch-sur-Sûre. It is a faithful replica of the ‘Crowned Virgin’, the original of which stands in the forecourt of the Basilica in Lourdes.

Legend has it that a woman from Esch-sur-Sûre, who was suffering from terminal cancer, was cured in Lourdes. Wishing to do a good deed in gratitude, she approached Father Dominik Trausch of Esch-sur-Sûre, who suggested that she erect a statue dedicated to the Virgin Mary. With the financial support of the entire village, the project was then realised.
