The challenges in archaeological reconstruction

During archaeological excavations, archaeologists usually uncover only the final traces of past eras: wall remains, pottery shards, coins, or tools. The further back in time we go, the more fragmentary the evidence becomes.

But how can these remains be presented in a way that makes them not only visible, but also understandable and engaging for a wide audience? One of the most common approaches is reconstruction: once carried out through physical reconstructions, such as those at Saalburg Roman Fort or Villa Borg, it is now increasingly achieved through digital technologies.

What are the advantages and limitations of these methods? What can—and should—still be done today in this field? If you have ever asked yourself these questions, we invite you to join a guided tour of the Roman settlement of Ricciacum, today's Dalheim. Together, we will explore why Roman Dalheim cannot simply be rebuilt and discover the extensive work behind archaeological drawings and digital reconstructions.

Practical information

The guided tour will be conducted in Luxembourgish, but may be adapted to one of the listed languages depending on the audience.
