Description
Colmar-Berg is nationally known for housing the grand ducal residence. Near the castle runs the Auto-Pédestre Colmar-Berg.
The Auto-Pédestre Colmar-Berg starts at the city park. It stretches for almost two kilometers along the Schwarzbaach, which it crosses. Then it rises almost up to Brosiushaff, where the highest point of the walk is located.
At first, the path leads through the forest before it reaches Colmar-Berg across meadows. Here it runs in close proximity to the grand ducal residence, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Incidentally, the first castle located at this site dates back to 1311.
Since 1934, the castle has been state-owned and is made available to the current Grand Duke and his family.
During World War II, the castle was turned into a “Napola,” an elite school for girls focusing on language skills and home economics. Almost all students were of German origin and lived in the boarding school.
After the war, the castle was renovated and only reclaimed by Grand Duke Jean in 1964.
A few hundred meters past the castle, you reach the end of the walk.
