Description
The Auto-Pédestre Bettendorf starts in the village center heading towards Moestroff, before returning through the forest to the starting point.
Bettendorf has been settled since the Gallo-Roman period, including by the Rhine Franks. A descendant of this people, a certain Betto, gave the place its name.
In the Middle Ages, the village had two castles, one of which was destroyed. On the ruins of the other, a baroque castle was built, which still exists today.
The Auto-Pédestre starts in the village center and first guides you along the cycle path along the Sauer to Moestroff. Here it goes steeply uphill to climb the Schoofsbierg. It passes the Hirzenhaff and through the Gemengebësch.
Shortly before the village entrance is a memorial stone to the 10th US Infantry Regiment. During the Battle of the Bulge, the Sauer valley was heavily contested. On January 10, 1945, the US soldiers managed to cross the Sauer. A strategically very important maneuver.
Just like the soldiers back then, you must cross the Sauer to return to your starting point.
