Hands‑on workshop exploring raw earth construction techniques

The Earth Laboratory explores different methods of earth construction using resources available in our region.
During the workshops, we will discuss the properties of local clay soils and the practical possibilities for using them in house construction or other architectural and development projects. To improve their mechanical and thermal properties, the earth can be mixed with plant fibres, sand or gravel, depending on the technique chosen.
This project is initiated by Dkollektiv and Iwwerliewen asbl.
Earth Lab 1 - Saturday 7 March 2026 (2:00 pm-6:00 pm) at VEWA
During this first workshop, we will produce samples using the following techniques:
raw earth bricks (made using moulds)
qenouilles (earth-straw mixture rolled onto bars)
earth-straw filling (wooden frame filled with an earth-straw mixture)
Earth Lab 2 - Saturday, 28 March 2026 (2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) at VEWA
During this second workshop, we will experiment with:
rammed earth (compacting wet earth in a mould)
earth plaster (applying a layer of earth plaster to a surface)
evaluating the dried samples from workshop 1
Why earth?
Because it's there.

Because it allows us to build with less impact, less transport, less grey energy.
Because it naturally regulates humidity, improves indoor comfort and creates healthy spaces.
Because it mobilises accessible, transferable and collective know-how.
Because it connects architecture, territory and community.
And above all... because learning to build with earth means relearning how to build consciously.
