Description

Scenic Refreshment stops available
Both guests and the citizens of the capital can look forward to a new tourist highlight. With the opening of the UNESCO Bike Tour, the first UNESCO cycling route and thus another part of the marketing of the World Heritage "Luxembourg Old Town and Fortress" is being implemented.

The UNESCO cycling route opens up Luxembourg's World Heritage

On the UNESCO route, guests as well as Luxembourgers can easily explore the Petrusse Valley and the lower towns of Grund, Clausen, and Pfaffenthal, while discovering a variety of attractions. On the 9.5-kilometer-long UNESCO route, there is much unknown to discover; 80 sights are described at 9 reference points. The aim is to understand what makes the World Heritage in Luxembourg special and why it is valuable for all of us: the vegetable gardens and the origin of the sandstone rocks in the Petrusse Valley, the fortress structures, the Greins Chapel, the birth houses of important Luxembourgers, the former Mansfeld Castle, the Hospice Civil and its historic organ. In addition, there are numerous cultural institutions such as the cathedral, the national library, the Casino - forum d’art contemporain, the natural history museum, the cultural meeting center Neumünster, the former mustard factory "Muerbelsmillen", the Villa Vauban - art museum of the city of Luxembourg, the city theater, and the synagogue. Visitors can take a relaxing break in Mansfeld Park, Odendahl Park, or the city park. Further highlights along the route include small hidden memorial plaques and the Robert Schuman monument.

Easy to reach and easy to cycle

The UNESCO tour is part of the management plan of the World Heritage "Luxembourg, Old Town and Fortress" and belongs to the strategies for raising awareness for the preservation and development of our urban landscape. The project aims to precisely identify which places, monuments, and sights belong to the World Heritage of the city of Luxembourg. Together with 9 partners, both the route and the sights en route were determined. This collaboration is officially requested by UNESCO in Paris. The "Bike Tour" complements the UNESCO city tour through the upper town, which was presented in 2018. Further discovery tours are in preparation, as celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the World Heritage "Luxembourg, Old Town and Fortress" begin on December 17. By bike, many sights are easily and ecologically accessible.

The UNESCO Bike Tour is available as a map in 5 languages (L, F, D, GB, NL). With the digital outdoor guides Izi-Travel and Spoticle.lu, you can have the route guidance along the UNESCO route with explanations displayed on your smartphone, so even those unfamiliar with the area can quickly and easily orient themselves. The electric bikes from the Veloh bike rental optimally open up Luxembourg's rugged terrain. 14 Veloh stations are located in close proximity to the route.
