Venus in Retrograde
Alea Pinar Du Pre
Venus in Retrograde explores femininity as a space of self-possession, transformation and renewed awareness. Through a distinctive visual language that brings together figurative painting, digital aesthetics and meticulous manual processes, Alea Pinar Du Pre questions the ways in which beauty, identity and desire are shaped by cultural expectations and visual conventions.
Drawing on the symbolic resonance of Venus and the idea of retrograde motion as a return inward, the exhibition invites a reconsideration of femininity beyond established ideals. Sensuality and strength, softness and authority, intuition and independence coexist without contradiction, opening up new possibilities for how femininity can be experienced and expressed.
.
Du Pre’s female figures command the space they inhabit. Their direct gazes challenge the traditional relationship between viewer and image, shifting the act of looking into an encounter. Neither passive nor idealised, they embody a presence that does not seek approval, but asserts its own complexity.
At the intersection of the personal, the mythological and the contemporary, Venus in Retrograde. proposes a return not to an idealised past, but to a more complete understanding of the self. It asks what happens when beauty ceases to be a measure imposed from outside and becomes a language of autonomy, consciousness and presence.
