Gianni Schicchi
Music by Giacomo Puccini
A one-act opera with a libretto by Giovanni Forzano
Ed. Ricordi
The only purely comic opera by Giacomo Puccini, this work is a true musical and theatrical gem, appealing to a wide audience, from first-time opera-goers to seasoned music lovers, from younger audiences to experienced enthusiasts.
A biting and delightfully entertaining plot. Inspired by an episode from Canto XXX of Dante's Inferno, the opera is set in Florence in 1299. The wealthy family of Buoso Donati pretends to grieve his death until they discover that he has left his entire fortune to the Church. Panic-stricken, the heirs enlist the help of Gianni Schicchi, a clever and resourceful peasant, to forge the will. But the scheme ultimately backfires on the greedy conspirators.
A fast-paced work with an immersive staging. Lasting approximately one hour, the opera never loses momentum. Presented with a 360-degree immersive set design that places the audience at the heart of the action, this comedy allows spectators to experience the story from within, blurring the boundaries between stage and auditorium. The tone is lively, the humor sharp, cynical, and exuberant, while Puccini's score is dramatically precise, at times biting, at others richly lyrical. In this perfectly crafted theatrical machine, acting is just as essential as vocal performance.
The opera will be preceded by an introduction on Dante and The Divine Comedy.
This production showcases young soloists selected through auditions, reflecting the high artistic standards and international reputation of the Sequenda. company within the opera world.
