Sierra Nevada Natives

Self-taught Luxembourg documentary photographer Christian Kieffer has developed a deeply humanistic body of work over many years, shaped by his travels and encounters, particularly in Latin America. Through portraiture and black-and-white photography, he seeks to reveal the dignity, resilience, and individuality of the people he photographs. His approach is grounded in listening, patience, and trust. Free from staging or artifice, his images bear witness to a genuine encounter between photographer and subject. Each face becomes the keeper of a story, a memory, and an identity. Through a visual language that is at once direct, sensitive, and timeless, Christian Kieffer invites viewers to move beyond observation and enter into a silent dialogue with the people portrayed. His work was notably selected by the British Journal of Photography for an exhibition at Galerie Huit in Arles, as part of the 2026 Rencontres de la Photographie. Beginning in December 2026, Christian Kieffer presents a body of twenty large-format photographs. This series takes viewers into the heart of the Indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Through powerful black-and-white portraits, the photographer pays tribute to women and men whose lives are deeply rooted in their land, culture, and ancestral traditions. Stripped of all superfluous elements, the photographs focus attention on faces, expressions, and the marks of time. They neither seek to idealize nor to explain, but rather to make visible a human presence in all its strength and dignity. Presented in the former monastic library of Neumünster Abbey, beneath the frescoes of Abraham Gilson, these works create a dialogue between cultures, eras, and collective memories. The historic and contemplative atmosphere of the chapel provides a particularly fitting and solemn setting for these portraits. The exhibition invites visitors to slow down, to look closely, and to encounter—beyond geographical distance—that which connects us all as human beings. Organisateur(s) principal(aux): neimënster ..
