Vianden – A Picturesque Medieval Town in Luxembourg Vianden, a charming medieval town in Luxembourg, captivates visitors with its narrow streets and lively festivals. Its true jewel, however, is the impressive Vianden Castle, majestically perched above the Our Valley. Carefully restored, the castle not only reflects centuries of history but also offers breathtaking panoramic views across Vianden and its surroundings.

Vianden is well worth a visit year-round. The changing landscapes and the diverse cultural programme lend the town a special charm.

The city has a rich history. Notable figures like Victor Hugo, Edmond de la Fontaine and members of the House of Nassau have shaped Vianden’s heritage.

Vianden: geography & historical setting

Geographically, Vianden lies in the Luxembourg Ardennes / Éislek, bordering the Eifel and the Müllerthal. The town sits on the river Our and is dominated by its imposing castle. The Grand-Rue and the bridge with the Victor Hugo statue are popular photo spots.

Vianden Castle – a unique heritage gem

The Vianden Castle is part of the national heritage and was named by CNN as one of the 20 most beautiful castles worldwide. Restored, it offers breathtaking views over the Our Valley. Highlights include the chapel, the Grand Pallas, Petit Pallas, and the gallery.

Hiking around Vianden

The surroundings invite exploration. Six walking trails start in town — for example to Vianden Castle or through the Our Valley. The Nat’Our Route 5 offers spectacular views. The Ourdall Promenade is accessible and ideal for families.

Victor Hugo Museum & dam art

The Victor Hugo House commemorates the writer who stayed here in 1871. On the Vianden Dam, a Reverse Graffiti was created in 2023, depicting faces of the workers involved.

Luxembourg’s only chairlift

The Vianden Chairlift travels over the Our to the hill station and provides panoramas of the old town and nature. At the top, a terrace and a photo moment await.

Accommodation & gastronomy

Vianden offers many restaurants and cafés, often overlooking the Our. Options include hotels, holiday apartments and campsites.

Location & connection

Located on the German border and close to Belgium, Vianden is easily reachable by public transport or car. Its proximity to Clervaux, Echternach and Diekirch makes it an ideal base.
