Vianden: geography & historical setting
Geographically, Vianden lies in the Luxembourg Ardennes / Éislek, bordering the Eifel and the Müllerthal. The town sits on the river Our and is dominated by its imposing castle. The Grand-Rue and the bridge with the Victor Hugo statue are popular photo spots.
Vianden Castle – a unique heritage gem
The Vianden Castle is part of the national heritage and was named by CNN as one of the 20 most beautiful castles worldwide. Restored, it offers breathtaking views over the Our Valley. Highlights include the chapel, the Grand Pallas, Petit Pallas, and the gallery.
Hiking around Vianden
The surroundings invite exploration. Six walking trails start in town — for example to Vianden Castle or through the Our Valley. The Nat’Our Route 5 offers spectacular views. The Ourdall Promenade is accessible and ideal for families.
Victor Hugo Museum & dam art
The Victor Hugo House commemorates the writer who stayed here in 1871. On the Vianden Dam, a Reverse Graffiti was created in 2023, depicting faces of the workers involved.
Luxembourg’s only chairlift
The Vianden Chairlift travels over the Our to the hill station and provides panoramas of the old town and nature. At the top, a terrace and a photo moment await.
