Wiltz
Where? 35, Rue du Château, L-9516 Wiltz
Nestled in the Upper-Sûre Nature Park in northern Luxembourg, Wiltz is surrounded by wooded hills and peaceful valleys. The name Wiltz is of Celtic origin and means ‘by the stream’. With around 8,000 inhabitants, it is one of the key towns in the Éislek region and a popular destination for culture lovers, nature enthusiasts and anyone wishing to explore Luxembourg’s rural landscapes.
Wiltz through the ages: industry and the Second World War
Like much of northern Luxembourg, Wiltz has a rich and eventful history. In the High Middle Ages it became the seat of the Counts of Wiltz, one of the oldest noble families in the country. The origins of Wiltz Castle date back to this period.
Over the centuries, the town developed into an important centre of craft and industry. The leather industry in particular shaped Wiltz: until the mid-20th century, several tanneries produced high-quality leather here. Remains of this industrial heritage can still be seen in the townscape today.
During the Second World War, Wiltz suffered heavy destruction and was later officially recognised as a “Martyr Town”. In 1942, the nationwide general strike against forced conscription began here – many locals lost their lives during these events. Today, the Fatima Memorial and the Strike Monument commemorate them. Nearby, the Schumannseck stands as a major memorial site of the Battle of the Bulge.
