The central square of Esch-sur-Alzette
The history of this beautiful square dates back to the 19th century. It was the first public square built in front of the old Town Hall, which opened in 1863. The Town Hall as we know it today dates from 1937, and the square retained its original appearance until the early 1950s, when it was again modified to create a car park for the town centre. Then, in 2005, an ambitious plan to redevelop and beautify the streets, squares and buildings of the town centre was launched. The newly renovated square was opened on 11 July 2008. Since then, it has regularly hosted events such as fairs, the Christmas market, music festivals, national holiday festivities, the weekly market, flea markets and community gatherings.</p>
