Liebe, Horror, Monster

What characterizes a monster? What are we afraid of and why? Can a transformation be liberating?

Eleven students from the 2E art class at Lycée Aline Mayrisch. explored these questions as part of a collaborative school project with Luxembourg artist Mike Bourscheid. Over several months, they approached the themes of love, horror and monsters from both an interdisciplinary and a personal perspective. Central to their exploration were questions of identity, gender roles, societal expectations and the challenges of adolescence.

Drawing inspiration from shared texts*, film trailers, artistic works, and feminist and surrealist influences, the students, guided by Mike Bourscheid, created videos, costumes andsculptures. Their works explored identity and portrayed monsters as complex and multifaceted figures. Horror was understood not only as fear or threat, but as a possibility for (self-chosen) transformation, protection and empowerment. The students’ artworks and collaborative creations illustrate a creative process of experimentation andquestioning, resulting in new visual and personal narratives.

.

The works speak of longing, uncertainty, beauty ideals, loss, belonging and self-discovery. They invite us to reconsider traditional ideas about love, horror and monsters from a new perspective.
