New methods and perspectives in Archaeology

Recent advances in geophysical survey and remote sensing have allowed archaeologists to map not only buried sites but entire landscapes without excavation.

Combined with traditional research methods, they offer new understanding of Roman provincial landscapes, from urban sites to rural settlement. This talk explores these approaches through fieldwork in Roman Britain (present-day Yorkshire).

.

Martin Millett is Emeritus Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. His research has focused on Roman imperial power, indigenous societies and the application of new fieldwork methods in archaeology.

He is currently President of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
