As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to fall, Luxembourg is anything but dormant. In the run-up to Christmas, a magical atmosphere envelops the Grand Duchy. As the first Christmas markets open and the scent of mulled wine and festive treats fills the air, not only the capital but also many charming towns and villages across the country invite visitors to enjoy memorable seasonal experiences.
One of the highlights of the season is the Winterlights Festival in Luxembourg City. Thousands of lights, beautifully decorated market stalls and a varied programme create a truly enchanting atmosphere. Visitors can savour traditional Luxembourg specialities such as Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters) and Boxemännercher, the famous brioche men. The festival is further enhanced by numerous events, performances and attractions for the whole family. And with a little luck, visitors may even meet Kleeschen (St. Nicholas), who delights children with gifts.
The magic of Advent extends far beyond the capital. Nestled in a festively decorated park along the River Eisch, the Christmas market in Steinfort offers a wide selection of handcrafted products and delicious food. For a particularly memorable experience, visit the Krësmoort in Vianden. This picturesque medieval town in the Éislek region charms visitors with its festive programme and the opportunity to explore its impressive castle. Vianden is not alone in providing a magical winter backdrop, as many of Luxembourg’s castles and fortresses offer stunning scenery for seasonal walks. In the spa town of Mondorf, visitors can browse numerous stalls featuring gift ideas and local products, while concerts and entertainment for all ages add to the festive spirit.
