Christmas time and carnival Wintertime in Luxembourg

Luxembourg in winter: magic all around

Destination(s): Moselle, Éislek, Guttland, Luxembourg City, Minett, Mullerthal

Wintertime in Luxembourg means warm lights before Christmas and colourful impressions at Carnival.

As the days draw in and the scent of mulled wine and pastries fills the air, Luxembourg shines in an extra special light. The pre-Christmas season in the Grand Duchy is an experience not only in the capital but also in other charming places across the country.

One particular highlight is the Winterlights Festival in Luxembourg City. Festively decorated stalls line the streets under the glow of thousands of lights, offering traditional Luxembourgish specialities such as Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters) and Boxemännercher (little brioche men). There are events, performances and many more attractions for the whole family everywhere you look. Among them, Kleeschen (Saint Nicholas) arrives to hand out gifts.

But the magic of Advent can be felt throughout the country, not only in the capital: Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, invites visitors to the east with its atmospheric Christmas market and its abbey, which shines in a stunning display of lights. Clervaux in the north invites you to take a cosy winter walk around the castle, where you can escape the Christmas stress in the peaceful Luxembourgish countryside. The country’s other castles also provide a fantastic setting for a stroll. A special experience in the north is the Christmas market around the spectacular Slate Museum in Haut-Martelange, which is open for visits all year round.

Fuesent, the Luxembourgish Carnival

After the New Year, the festivities continue: Fuesent, the Luxembourgish Carnival, brings plenty of colour to dull winter days. Starting in February, the country awakens from its winter slumber to celebrate the ‘fifth season’ with colourful processions, masked balls and traditional treats such as Fueskichelcher or Verwurelter (deep-fried pastry knots). The processions in Diekirch and Remich are particularly popular, filling the streets with costumes, music and good cheer.

Whether it’s the peaceful charm of festively decorated towns or the lively Carnival spirit, Luxembourg’s winter offers something for everyone. Discover Luxembourg between the seasons and let yourself be inspired.
