Aspelt Castle

Where? 37, Peiter vun Uespelt-Strooss, L-5710 Aspelt

More than 1.000 years of history

Although nobility no longer reigns in Aspelt Castle today, this charming Baroque building has been transformed into a true hidden gem: as a new event location, one can celebrate parties or events in style, stroll through an art exhibition, purchase local products in the castle's own shop, or attend a presentation, chamber performance, or theatrical production in a state-of-the-art show room. Thanks to recent expansions, it is now even possible to stay overnight—not in the castle itself, but practically next door, in two specially designed holiday apartments. Guided tours of the castle and its surroundings are offered by the "Uespelter Schlassfrënn".

The beautifully restored castle in Aspelt was once a medieval two piece fortress with a moat, whose construction likely dates back to long before its first written mention in a deed in 963. An earlier construction date is assumed, as the year 963 happens to be the same year in which the "Lucilinburhuc," the seat of Count Siegfried, from which the city of Luxembourg would later develop, was also first mentioned – suggesting that the fortress had existed for considerably longer.

Over the years, the castle changed hands several times, and consequently, so did its appearance. The transformation into a Renaissance castle was achieved through major renovations in the 16th century, before another change of ownership in the 18th century finally transformed it into the Baroque building we see today. A visit from the "Schlassfrënn" is sure to guide you through all of the different changes in great detail.

The castle has only been entirely publicly owned since 2002, and the restoration work is correspondingly recent, thorough, and extensive. The results are certainly worth seeing, as a guided tour will undoubtedly demonstrate.
