Due to forestry works at Aesbaach the local hiking trail E1 will be closed from 22 April until probably 8 May!

This tour combines the oldest city of Luxembourg with two of the region's most impressive geological highlights: the Wollefsschlucht near Echternach and the Huel Lee in Berdorf.

The tour runs on a scenic route through forests and between rocks in the area between Echternach and Berdorf. Special features of the tour include the Wollefsschlucht, the Huel Lee, the Amphitheater and the valley of the Aesbach.

The Wolfsschlucht is a steep crevice through which you are hiking.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, millstones were taken out for the mills in the region in Hul Lee and Breechkaul (now the Amphitheater). The traces can still be seen today as striking patterns in the rock.

The tour is quite demanding (ascent from Echternach to the Berdorfer Plateau) and takes about 4 hours. Sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. Only some sections can also be hiked (e.g. only Echternach - Berdorf or vice versa). There are regular bus connections between Berdorf and Echternach.

This demanding hike starts at the basilica in the heart of Echternach.

The city of Echternach was founded in 698 by the Anglo-Saxon missionary Willibrord, making it the oldest city in Luxembourg. Buildings such as the basilica, the abbey and the orangery are impressive witnesses of the historical past. The market square with its shops and numerous restaurants and cafés invites you to stroll and linger. Other places worth seeing are the museums, the Roman villa and lake of Echternach.

The tour first leads through the picturesque Halergaass, a pedestrian zone with shops and restaurants.

After that, you walk up steeply uphill to the Trooskneppchen viwe point with a picturesque view of Echternach.

Shortly thereafter, you walk through the imposing Wollefsschlucht, where a detour high up on the "Paulsplatte" rock is worthwhile. You continue on a picturesque forest path through the Aesbaach Valley. Half way down is Huel Lee Cave and Amphitheatre, which used to be a mill quarry.

You return to Echternach past other rock formations such as the Wëlkeschkummer and the Geierslee.
