Urban Time Travel

This statue was inaugurated 29 April 1990. It is the expression of the great attachment that the people of Luxembourg had for Grand Duchess Charlotte who reigned from 1919 to 1964. She passed away in 1985.

Chemin de la Corniche

The Vauban Towers are named after the medieval constructions they replaced: the Eich Gate and the Bons Malades Gate.

Only a modest bronze plaque fixed to the right wing of the present headquarters building of the State Savings bank (BCEE) in Luxembourg City reminds of General Omar Bradley’s former Headquarters.

During the German occupation (from 1942 to 1944) the former railwaystation of Hollerich was the point of departure of numerous young people forcefully enroled in the German army and of 4000 people that were forcefully “resettled” in Eastern parts of Germany for political reasons, loosing all their belongings in Luxembourg.

The origins of the Pétrusse Casemates date back to the time when the Spanish modernised the medieval fortifications and built large bastions such as that of the Beck, whose platform is currently occupied by the Place de la Constitution.

From August 1940 on, the Gestapo had installed their headquarters on these premises.
