with Yves Steichen

The Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974 marked a decisive moment in the history of Portugal - and Europe - that put an end to the long-standing authoritarian rule of the Estado Novo government under António de Oliveira Salazar. The events and circumstances surrounding this largely non-violent military coup, triggered by the left-wing army group Movimento das Forças Armadas, have since been the subject of numerous films - both in the immediate aftermath of the revolution (e.g. in As armas e o povo by Glauber Rocha, 1974-75) as well as decades later and with the more distanced view of younger generations of directors (Capitães de Abril by Maria de Medeiros and Outro País by Sérgio Tréfaut, both 2000, as well as Les Grandes Ondes by Lionel Baier, 2013). The lecture - accompanied by numerous film excerpts - examines the cinematic representation of the Portuguese dictatorship and colonial wars as well as the Carnation Revolution and its consequences in cinema and television, from documentaries to experimental and feature films.

The talk will be held in Luxembourgish.
