Echter'Jazz Festival Day 2

With “Living Being IV: Time Reflections”, Vincent Peirani and his quintet present a work that is deeply rooted in the musical reflection and exploration of time. The new project, which consists of Émile Parisien, Tony Paeleman, Yoann Serra and Julien Herné, invites you to a sonic exploration in which every note is characterized by the complexity and nuances of the rhythm of life.

Created in the particular context of the first months of the Covid pandemic, this CD is the result of a moment of forced pause for Vincent Peirani, a break in his daily life that led him to meditate on how time shapes our lives and our perception of the world. “Time Réflections” is thus a mosaic in which the contemporary pulse and the echoes of traditional dances intersect, with a strong nod to Baroque music, which finds an unexpected and poetic place here.

Vincent Peirani's collaboration with artists from various fields gives his music an intertextual dimension. In this album, the influences of the Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke and the German pianist Michael Wollny are clearly evident in two tracks specifically dedicated to them. These resonances illustrate the richness and diversity that characterize Peirani's work, offering a musical experience that is both introspective and universal.

OZMA

After five years, OZMA returns with “The day we decided to live at night” - a deeply personal album by drummer and bandleader Stéphane Scharlé that marks a turning point in the band's history.

Together with his long-time companion, bassist Édouard Séro-Guillaume, he has assembled a new team, a musical makeover: Musina Ebobissé on saxophone, Martin Ferreyros on guitar and - new to the instrumentarium - Dan Jouravsky on keyboards, replacing the trombone.

OZMA, a central figure in modern French jazz, has been touring the world for over twenty years. With eight albums and more than 600 concerts in 43 countries on four continents, the quintet defends a bold music that fuses the energy of rock, the textures of electronics and the freedom of jazz.

Led by drummer Stéphane Scharlé, the Strasbourg-based band has created a musical universe that is both accessible and adventurous. OZMA explores the dialog between the arts and has produced numerous interdisciplinary and collaborative projects that transcend stylistic boundaries.

From large ensembles with artists from all over the world to a strong sensibility for film music, with numerous photo concerts and silent film concerts that reinterpret masterpieces of the seventh art. Each OZMA project demonstrates an unwavering determination to push boundaries, explore new artistic territories and build bridges between cultures and disciplines. The result is a universal, vibrant and contemporary narrative.

After Club Session: Olga Amelchenko.

“Howling Silence” is the powerful new album by Russian-born, Paris-based saxophonist Olga Amelchenko. The album marks a pivotal moment in her artistic career and embodies the emotional depth of personal struggles and the nuanced complexity of living between two worlds. Born and raised in Russia, shaped by years in Germany and now fully immersed in the vibrant jazz scene, Olga incorporates her rich cultural heritage and life experiences into a sonic narrative that is a testament to both resilience and introspection.

Inspired by tenor legends such as John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Walter Smith III and Mark Turner, Olga's intimate, naturally resonant saxophone sound forms the centerpiece of the album. A lush interplay of acoustic and electric elements unfolds, while piano, bass and drums create a tapestry of sound into which each instrument brings its own emotional depth. Longtime collaborators, drummer Jesus Vega, who previously lived in Berlin and is now based in Paris, dynamic bassist Etienne Renard, classically and jazz trained pianist Enzo Carniel and bluesy guest guitarist Matthew Stevens accompany Olga on her moving and personal journey.

Olga's creative process is a blend of spontaneity and disciplined artistry. She captures fleeting melodies on her saxophone and distills complex emotions into concise, mostly one-page compositions, with each track acting as a chapter in a larger narrative of struggle, hope and rebirth. From the imposing opener “Howling Silence” to the reflective passages of “Walking Shadows” to the cathartic surge of “Irreversible”, the album reflects an odyssey characterized by both personal and collective challenges.

“Howling Silence” is a transformative album, a record that gives voice to unspoken truths and invites the audience to reflect on the interplay between silence and expression.
