Sin Wai Kin — 2023 Baloise Art Prize

The exhibition unfolds around the series Portraits (2023), for which Sin Wai Kin (b. 1991, Toronto) recently won the 24th Baloise Art Prize, awarded during Art Basel 2023. Four works from this series have been acquired by Mudam as a result. These video portraits feature the artist who, through the use of sophisticated make-up and costumes, portrays characters referencing iconic artworks. The embodiment of fantasy is central to Sin Wai Kin’s practice, influenced by Traditional Chinese dramaturgy, drag and science fiction. Through their work, the artist surpasses gendered and normative approaches to identity, drawing attention to the construction of the physical within the social body.
