Impasto
Music Shaped by Migration, Exile, and Improvisation
Led by Luxembourg-based saxophonist Shauli Einav and American trombonist Nick Finzer, Impasto examines how migration, displacement, and cultural exchange have shaped musical language across continents. Tracing a line from European Impressionism to the emergence of jazz in the United States, the project reveals shared textures, harmonies, and expressive ideals - connecting composers such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie with jazz figures including Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Sidney Bechet. All works presented are the direct result of the residency’s collaborative process: composed from the ground up, without pre-existing material, under intense and focused conditions.
