Urban history

This guided lecture tour highlights the organisation of trade in the 19th century and its development up to the present day. It traces the profile of merchants and describes the role the hospitality sector played in the city’s economy. Particular emphasis is placed on the advertising character of commercial architecture. Discover how the government transformed the former fortress city into a major commercial centre, and delve into the history of fashion stores, renowned cafés, prestigious hotels and restaurants, exclusive boutiques, and former furniture shops.

 

The tour starts at Place Guillaume II and ends at Avenue Monterey..
