PESSOA – Since I’ve Been Me

ENIn his highly anticipated PESSOA – Since I've Been Me, renowned director Robert Wilson pays tribute to one of the most enigmatic figures of 20th-century Modernism. The production examines the poetic universe of Fernando Pessoa, the Portuguese writer who famously created a multitude of heteronyms – distinct literary identities that allowed him to write in diverse voices and styles. Wilson’s masterful staging brings Pessoa’s various voices to life, from Alberto Caeiro to Ricardo Reis to Álvaro de Campos, in a visually arresting theatrical experience that mirrors the poet’s shifting moods, from meditative to anarchic, from comic to melancholic. PESSOA – Since I've Been Me embodies the essence of Pessoa’s poetic imagination – the interplay of doubt, identity, and the endless pursuit of meaning. Featuring an international cast, it blends Italian, Portuguese, French, and English, reinforcing the multilingual and multifaceted nature of his work. Through Wilson’s distinctive visual language and innovative use of light and drawing from seminal works like The Book of Disquiet and Faust, the performance beautifully captures Pessoa’s profound exploration of existence and language.
