The Upper-Sûre lake, a paradise for nature lovers

The Upper-Sûre lake is located in the Öewersauer nature park and one of Luxembourg's most beautiful hiking areas.

The Upper-Sûre lake is a drinking water protection area. Accordingly, you must comply with the relevant rules (see our FAQ) during your visit. Since the lake is not a purely recreational area, the rest areas, as well as the parking facilities are limited.

Summer attracts a particularly high number of visitors around the lake. In order to avoid any parking problems, we ask you to use the free bus around the lake, the Stauséi-Navette.

Éislek also has many other places to visit where you can relax and cool down.

Water quality information

The various bathing sites in Luxembourg are subject to regular water quality checks. You can find out whether and where bathing is currently permitted on the website of the Water Management Authority.

What are the general rules of conduct around the Upper-Sûre lake?

Throwing garbage into nature, as in the whole country, is strictly prohibited at the lake. Unsuitable substances, such as soluble pollutants or plastic, lead to water contamination. If there is any waste left over after the picnic at the lake, it should be disposed of in the designated rubbish bins and, where provided, sorted and recycled into the appropriate bins. If this is not possible due to overfilled containers, the waste should be disposed of or recycled at home.

Can you swim in the Upper-Sûre lake at any time?

No. In Luxembourg, the bathing season runs from 1 May to 30 September. The bathing areas of the Upper Sûre lake are only accessible from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Are barbecues allowed at the Upper-Sûre lake?

Barbecuing is only allowed in designated areas. Around the lake there are barbecues built in Insenborn at the Fuussefeld that can be used. In Lultzhausen, guests can also benefit from the mobile snack stand. Wild barbecues and lighting fires are prohibited.

Are dogs allowed at the bathing spots?

Dogs are prohibited on all lawns around the Upper-Sûre lake. In order to avoid unrest among bathers, the surrounding municipalities have imposed a ban.

Can you camp at the Upper-Sûre lake?

Wild sleeping and wild camping are prohibited throughout Luxembourg. This also applies to the region of the Upper Sûre lake. After 11 p.m., the sunbathing lawns may no longer be used. Since the lake is a central component of a nature park, the protection of flora and fauna is in the foreground here. The camping ban ensures that the animals rest at night.

What about music?

Listening to music is only allowed with headphones. The Upper-Sûre lake is a recreational area, but above all a nature reserve. Human music and noise disturb wildlife. That's why we suggest: just listen to the sounds of nature all around you in this pleasant area.

What parking facilities are offered?

Parking is only allowed in the designated parking spaces. Visitors are asked to use public transport to get to the lakeside areas. If you come by car, you must park your vehicle in a designated parking space. Vehicles parked outside of designated spaces obstruct traffic and, in the worst case, delay the passage of emergency vehicles.

Can I do water sports at the Upper-Sûre lake

All types of motorized water sports are prohibited.

Activities around the Upper Sûre Lake

The Upper-Sûre lake is located in a nature reserve. If you want to see the beautiful landscape from the water, you can rent canoes, kayaks or stand-up paddles at the youth hostel in Lultzhausen in advance. Of course, there is also the possibility to explore the lake on your own boat or SUP.

Attention: Water sports may not be practised in the water protection zone, which extends from the main dam wall to about 5 km into the lake. In addition, the bathing season in Luxembourg is only open from 1 May to 30 September.

If you want to organize a special kind of excursion, we recommend taking a trip on the solar boat. On this guided tour you will get more detailed information about the fauna and flora of the nature reserve.
