Opsomming

Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean presents Vivian Suter's (*1949) Nisyros (2017), presented in Athens as part of Documenta 14 (2017), and recently acquired for the Mudam Collection. The Nisyros series was painted on the Greek volcanic island of Nisyros located in the Aegean Sea. It consists of nineteen paintings, executed in a vivid style that mirrors the natural surroundings in which they were conceived: in the crater of the volcano, at the edge of the cliff or on the roof of a house that faces the sea. The paintings reflect ambient light, surrounding colours and effects of climatic forces to which they were subjected over the course of time. In the museum, the canvases are suspended in a progressive arrangement that corresponds to the conditions of display.
Vivian Suter was born in Buenos Aires once her parents emigrated from Europe following the Second World War. After studying art in Basel, Switzerland, during a trip to Latin America in the 1980s, she settled in Panajachel – on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala – where she still lives with her mother, the painter Elisabeth Wild. Suter's close and personal relationship with nature is a determinant and constitutes a driving force in her pictorial work, it is particularly visible in the Nisyros series.
