Unless I’m Mistaken, is the end-of-year exhibition of the post-master fellows at Casino Display. The Artistic Research Lab is a European post-master in collective artistic research, run by a consortium formed by Casino Display and Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain (Luxembourg), the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre (La Cambre, Brussels, Belgium), the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR, Strasbourg/Mulhouse, France), the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK, The Hague, Netherlands), and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Nancy (Ensad Nancy, France).
Unless I’m Mistaken, points at a certain ambiguity. On one hand, there is the question of movement — from one language to another, but also the movement between geographies: how things travel, what is brought along, what is left behind, what is folded in or left unspoken, or refused to be acknowledged. Once the move has been made, something always lingers behind — a residue that resists being carried across, or that quietly persists: a meaning, a right, a trace.
.
What is shown always implies what cannot be seen behind it.
If I were to lift the tile, what would be hidden behind?
Could you still grasp the fleeting sound of the wind?
Why that longing for what’s inside that scrapped car?
Who creates what, what creates what, what creates who?
What’s on the flip side of the spiral?
And at the same time, a resistance to the hiding of that very thing.
In the end, Unless I’m Mistaken, is this back-and-forth, this push and pull between what is folded and what is unfolded, what is shown and what is not, how it is done, and who holds the agency to do it. It is by posing questions that we define the boundaries of the ambiguity, and the care we want to give in our answers — to ourselves and to others.
