Echter’Classic Festival: Sandrine Cantoreggi, Sheila Arnold, Luigi Gaggero
Showcase | Méli-Mélo - Present Silences
As part of the Echter'Classic festival, Sandrine Cantoreggi presents herself in two constellations. The duo Méli-Mélo with pianist Sheila Arnold was born out of curiosity for the works of unjustly forgotten composers. For their showcase, the musicians present a work by the French composer Mel Bonis (1858-1937).
Born in a working-class Parisian environment, Mel Bonis began her musical training as an autodidact; her talent and seriousness later enabled her to join the prestigious organ class of C. Franck at the Paris Conservatory. Her oeuvre includes around 300 pieces for different formations. Pedagogical, mystical or concerting, they all are characteristic of post-romanticism and tinged with impressionism.
In the unusual formation of violin and harpsichord, Present Silences offers a journey through the different possibilities for the quality of time in the present: the idea of time of popular and baroque music; the metaphysical and cosmic time of Hosokawa and Kurtág, the human time of Bartók and Iranyi, with its infinite nuances of human feelings. The chosen masterpieces for this program create a fascinating sound universe of omnipresent silences.
