Dances with Ligeti
Have two art forms ever forged such a close and complex relationship as music and dance? How does music move? How does dance sound? And where do these sounds and movements meet, once freed from their supposed task of imitating or reflecting, creating an atmosphere, providing a setting or coexisting?
The Hungarian composer György Ligeti said of his virtuoso Études pour piano that "tactile concepts were almost as important as acoustic concepts" in the compositional process. The movements and developments of the music are thus not just a matter of listening, but of sensation: they can be experienced "as a tactile form, a succession of muscular tensions".
With their forms and sequences, Ligeti's pieces could be seen as "growing organisms". Following this line of reasoning, the choreographer Elisabeth Schilling has created a form of choreographic interpretation of the Études pour piano. By treating dance and music as coherent forms that grow alongside and within each other, she has created, with her five dancers and pianist Cathy Krier, a dance concert charged with captivating multisensory images.
