Jazz Goes North: Petra Jordan: Surrender
Jazz Goes North: Petra Jordan: Surrender
‘Surrender’ is an audio visual project, a live acoustic performance of 4 songs captured on video and audio, and produced by Bai Kamara Jr. Guided by my experience with meditation and introspection about the dualities of the self, most songs on the album document a journey of healing and liberation from the ubiquitous yet futile search for love outside of oneself. In an effort to demystify attraction in romantic love, The Way We Dance is inspired by the recognition that we are attracted to that which is familiar. By recreating familiar situations from childhood we attempt to heal them as adults – as the “hidden wounds that need to heal attract the very thing that they most fear.” That is the way we grow, that is the way we dance. Surrender is about surrendering to that attraction, yet with the awareness of the power of the heart and love. Foreseeing a shattering storm ahead, once and for all I needed to face what I found so magnetic about an emotionally unavailable man. On a visceral level I knew that by letting my heart lead the way, I would emerge wiser and stronger in the end.
Following a two year period of self-introspection and healing the relationship with myself, I was ready to embark on healing the relationship with my musical career. With a newly found confidence and ground under my feet, Let Love speaks of finding freedom from other people’s opinions while recognizing the ego’s desire to be accepted and approved of by others. Heart On Her Sleeve is the only song on the EP that is not my personal story but a song written for the winner of a raffle that I organized at a Christmas concert…
