Mania [feat. Czerwie]
Mania. Die Geschichte einer Zigarettenarbeiterin Allemagne 1918 | Eugen Illés | vostEN | 85’ | digital | Cast : Pola Negri, Arthur Schröder, Werner Hollmann, Ernst Wendt
The 1918 German melodrama Mania, directed by Eugen Illès and featuring Polish star Pola Negri, will be screened with live music from the Polish band Czerwie. The film had been considered lost
until 2006, when the Filmoteka Narodowa in Poland found and restored the film. It offers a prime showcase of why Negri, then also the muse of Ernst Lubitsch, was such a megastar.
In Mania, Negri plays the titular cigarette-factory worker at the heart of a love triangle that also involves a composer and a patron of the arts who could benefit or hinder the composer’s career. Will Mania make a huge sacrifice for love?
Czerwie consists of four musicians : Wojtek Zaborowski, Maciek Kudlacik, Pawel Zawarus and Piotrek Bogunia. They have given over 1,000 concerts and are among the leading ensembles that play live music for silent films. Their unmistakable style involves the use of unconventional instruments and combines different genres including pop, rock and ethno.
