From 1681, Louis XIV's troops blockade the fortress of Luxembourg. At Christmas 1683, the city is bombarded for several days. It is not until the end of April 1684 that the siege by Marshal Créqui begins. After six weeks of intense fighting, the Spanish garrison is forced to surrender. Vauban learns the lessons of this siege and strengthens the fortress on the surrounding plateaus.
