During the 2023 edition, the festival welcomes the musical titan Gilberto Gil, who performs the festival finale in the Grand Auditorium, as part of his last European tour. Guitar slung over his shoulder and accompanied by several family members, this veteran of Brazilian music will demonstrate that he has lost none of his activism. Another Brazilian makes his Philharmonie debut: the pianist Amaro Freitas, whose percussive jazz Downbeat calls a «hybrid of Abdullah Ibrahim, Thelonious Monk and Chick Corea». From Cape Verde, the singer Cremilda Medina will also take the stage for the first time at the Philharmonie, taking up the cudgels for the morna, an emblematic musical style from her homeland which is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Portugal is represented by the meeting between the enchanting fado singer Lina and the successful producer Raül Refree, promising a modern mix of vocals and electronics, and also by Salvador Sobral’s jazz-infused pop, which took off after he won the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. Young audiences will not be forgotten and will be able to enjoy several dedicated projects, among which an introductory workshop on the art of capoeira. Bem-vindos to all!
