Since Portugal becomes a member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), of which Luxembourg is currently holding the presidency, the Luxembourg National Archives want to highlight the relations between Portugal and Luxembourg through an exhibition dedicated to Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954)
. In his function as Portugal’s Consul General in Bordeaux at the beginning of the Second World War, this outstanding man saved the lives of thousands of refugees – amongst whom were also Luxembourg citizens – by issuing visas to them, hereby opposing the orders of his government.
Discover from 28 November 2019 to 22 February 2020 the exhibition created by the National Archives of Luxembourg. The exhibition opening will take place on 27 November 2019 at 6 p.m in the presence of the Minister for Culture, Sam Tanson.
The exhibition "Aristides de Sousa Mendes - Un consul portugais entre la conscience humaine et la raison d'État"
, in French and English, is organised under the High Patronage of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess.
