Summary

Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean continues its programme of displays drawn from its growing collection of photographic-based works that address forms of representation and the use of images to construct narratives both real and fictional.
The selection highlights emblematic practices in works of Bernd and Hilla Becha (1931-2007; 1934-2015), Valerie Belin (*1964), Sophie Calle (*1953), Izima Kaoru (*1954), and Nan Goldin (*1953) alongside those of more recent artists including Shirin Neshat (*1957), Thomas Demand (*1964) and Wolfgang Tillmans (*1968). Portraiture, intimately captured or artfully staged, relationships to the archive, and constructed narratives of places and people reveal the richness and arresting nature of the medium of photography and its use by artists, from the conceptual strategies of the 1960s to the rapidly changing status of the image and its forms of production in the present.
