Dear friends of photography!

It's a great pleasure to announce the 13th edition of photomeetings luxembourg!
from September 12th to October 21st, 2017!

The theme of this year's edition is:
"man-made landscapes".

"If we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves!", says Edward Burtynsky, who has spent three decades making
determined efforts to deal with the difficult task of creating awareness through his photographs.
Through art, Burtynsky believes, people may be made aware and sensitized about the problem: "There is hope that
these pictures will stimulate a process of thinking about something essential to our survival; something we often take
for granted - until it's gone!"

Burtynsky's fearfully stunning photographs create awareness of the fact that mankind is destroying itself at a
disastrous speed. Burtynsky sees a chance that we could save the world and ourselves by using the same technologies
we used to destroy the earth, to save it instead and think about the consequences of our behaviour.
To tackle this subject, we have also invited the artists Mishka Henner, Jens Liebchen, Yvon Lambert and Hiroyuki
Masuyama to Luxembourg.

At Espace 2 of Galerie Clairefontaine, a group exhibition called "man-made landscapes" will showcase the eerily
beautiful photographs by Edward Burtynsky, Mishka Henner and Yvon Lambert, which tell a spooky tale about the
exploitation of nature by mankind. "Human beings have never stopped taking things from nature. Even though the act
of taking from the earth is natural since we are not outside of nature. What is different today is the scale!", argues
Edward Burtynsky. In Artnews, Alex Greenberger sums up Mishka Henner's work: "The scariest thing about Mishka
Henner's "photographs" is that they are so beautiful". Yvon Lambert's photographs of "industrial sculptures" portray
remnants of Luxembourg's steel industry.

Another exhibition entitled "Fake Nature" at Galerie Clairefontaine, Espace 1 will feature the series "System" by Jens
Liebchen in dialogue with Hiroyuki Masuyama's series "Flowers". In 2014, Hannes Wanderer wrote about "System":
"Nature only delivered the material for the trees. Position, growth, size and shape have been defined by people and
designed down to the smallest detail." In his series "Flowers" Masuyama creates images that unite all seasons and
thereby overrides the cycle of spring, summer, autumn and winter, which has shaped human life for centuries. On Place
de Clairefontaine a projection of Hiroyuki Masuyama's work will take place to accompany the exhibition.
As in previous years, the Cercle Cité will host the lectures, the round table discussion and the workshop.
The lectures will be held by Mishka Henner and Jens Liebchen. The round table discussion "Photography in
Luxembourg" with the participation of Vincenzo Cardile, Yvon Lambert, Michel Medinger and Raoul Ries will take
place at the Cité Auditorium of the Cercle Cité.

Jens Liebchen's work deals with political and social issues. His major series "System" seems to portrait stunning natural
landscapes, title and other hints however reveal the huge black pines inside a blizzard to be as strictly shaped as Japans
culture and society. The lecture "On concepts and photobooks" will be an introduction to his work, of which an
important part is the production of photo books. Many of his publications are highly acclaimed, such as DL07 -
Stereotypes of war: a photographic investigation which is prominently presented in Parr/Badger's The Photobook - a

In his lecture "Counterintelligence" the British artist Mishka Henner will talk about how the Internet and the geospatial
age have changed everything we thought we knew about photography. Where there were once single viewpoints there
are now many thousands. In this golden age of perspectives, the infinite array of documents uploaded to the web
offers unprecedented opportunities to reveal the workings of our world. With these themes in mind, Mishka Henner will
discuss his works on the American landscape, reflecting on the metaphoric significance of its military and industrial
logic. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A.

This year, Yvon Lambert will do a workshop called "En Friche" assisted by Vincenzo Cardile. There will be a
presentation with the theme "The fascination of the ruins, from the romantic painters to the photographers of the
Urbex", a practical part with a photoshoot of an industrial area, as well as discussions and viewings of the participants'
photographs made during the workshop.

Thank you very much to all of you who have supported photomeetings luxembourg for the past 12 years!
