Yes, its famous Hopping Procession is on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage, but that is far from the only reason there is to visit Echternach! The oldest town in the country and the historical and cultural centre of the Müllerthal region (also called Little Switzerland) has everything it takes to put you under its spell: lush nature, a beautiful lake, an impressive amount of playgrounds, remarkable historical sites, music festivals and other great cultural events, hiking trails and biking paths… It’s no wonder that families and sports enthusiasts alike see Echternach as the perfect place for a day (or more) out!
While being a modern and extremely dynamic city, Echternach also has a unique medieval atmosphere. Through the labyrinthine streets, past the remains and towers of the ancient city walls, the abbey, the basilica and the many historic buildings in Merovingian, Gothic and Roman styles, you’ll walk from one discovery to another. Fear not, there are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way and take a break in one of the many restaurants and cafés.
The city also holds some nice surprises for the shopper in you, no matter if you’re looking for well-known brands or local specialties. Echternach has plenty of different shops and stores, which will satisfy any need, and many are open on Sundays. A monthly market also takes place the second Wednesday of each month.
