Minett, the Land of the Red Rocks

The red-hot heart of the south

For several years now, the south of Luxembourg, its landscapes and industrial wastelands, its university and its cutting-edge research centres have been attracting attention abroad.

Classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2020, its nature reserves, such as the Ellergronn or the former open-cast mine Prënzebierg - Giele Botter, are ideal for exploring on foot or by mountain bike.

The Minett, named after its red soil rich in iron ore, was once a flagship of Luxembourg's industry and one of the cradles of the European steel industry. The Minett Tour will bring to life this still omnipresent past.

Esch-sur-Alzette, the country's second largest city, is also looking to the future. With its blast furnaces, two steel colossi that have been restored and transformed into cultural and tourist sites, its Belval district has since become a university hub and a world-renowned scientific and technological centre.

It is therefore no coincidence that the city has been designated European Capital of Culture 2022.
