USA 1991 / vostf+all / 78' / c / Documentaire de : Jennie Livingston / Avec : Venus Xtravaganza, Pepper LaBeija, Octavia St. Laurent > Grand Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival 1991 ; Audience Award, Toronto International Film Festival 1991 ; Teddy (Best Documentary Film), Berlinale 1991
Livingston spent seven years in late 1980s New York going to balls - social events held by the gay black community where contestants competed in different modelling and dancing events. These balls were also the birthplace of vogueing, the style of dance Madonna made famous shortly before Miramax released Paris Is Burning in 1991, when it became an arthouse hit.
« I picked the movie Paris is burning because it is one of the most beautiful, wonderful and powerful movies ever. It was, is and will always be an inspiration for my work and for me as a human being. » (Mike Bourscheid)
« The most passionately empathetic piece of documentary filmmaking I've seen. What makes all of this indelible is the people we meet: the funny and self-mocking legend Pepper LeBeija; the super-model wannabe Octavia Saint Laurent, who flashes a ravishing smile; and, most hauntingly, the innocent and sultry teen prostitute Venus Xtravaganza, who is like a Dickensian waif turned into a surreal emblem of late-20th-century yearning. » (Entertainment Weekly)
« Glorious! Swift, entertaining and tantalizing. » (Village Voice)
