Castles & Fortresses

Take a journey through time

Whether restored splendour or ruins, the buildings from an earlier era are reminders of the country's powerful past - and all have their own unique charm. They house delightful hotels, renowned restaurants and important exhibitions, and are also venues for festivals and concerts.

Wander through meadows and forests along the ‘Valley of the Seven Castles’ national hiking trail. Other paths and trails also lead to magnificent buildings. Enjoy breath-taking views over the treetops and the Sûre Valley from the heights of Bourscheid Castle. Visit Larochette Castle, high upon a rocky crag above the picturesque village of the same name and the valley of the White Ernz. The world of knights in armour can be experienced at first hand at mediaeval festivals – the best known of which is held at Vianden Castle.

History buffs will not want to miss the forts, bastions and casemates of Luxembourg City’s fortifications. They are a reminder of the period between the 16th and 19th centuries, when Luxembourg was a fortress and regarded as the ‘Gibraltar of the North’. What was once one of the most important fortresses in Europe is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
