Adrien Ries (1933-1991), born in Biwels, was a Luxembourgish lawyer, economist and author. From 1962 to 1986, he worked for the European Commission. In 1973, he coined the term “Nordstad” for the urban area Diekirch/Ettelbruck. Apart from his many economic publications, he was above all known in Luxembourg as a versatile author of diaries, travelogues and newspaper columns. He was an avid hiker and travelled thousands of kilometers on foot through the Grand Duchy and Europe. The 48km walking trail that surrounds the six municipalities of the "Nordstad" would certainly have been to his liking!
