ON A HIGH NOTE:
The Luxembourg House

The address 17 Beekman Place was home to the great American composer Irving Berlin and his family from 1947 until his death in 1989 at the age of 101. Irving Berlin composed the musical "Call Me Madam"
here. The play revolved around the appointment of Perle Mesta as Ambassador to Luxembourg by former President Truman. At 90, Berlin was still enjoying his wonderful townhouse, playing on his cherished piano that he referred to as the "Buick."

In 1990, the five-story townhouse was purchased by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and was renovated to accommodate offices for the Luxembourg Government in New York City. The Luxembourg House serves as headquarters for the Permanent Mission of Luxembourg to the U.N., the Consulate General of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Board of Economic Development, and the Luxembourg Tourist Office. The building was originally designed in 1929 by the architect Harold Steiner for former Secretary of Defense James Forrestal.
